Quick and Kid-Friendly German Pancakes
Quick and Kid-friendly German Pancakes
This is the best recipe for German pancakes your whole family will love. They are quick and very kid friendly. But shhh…. I don’t put any added sugar in mine. It can be our secret. A lot of variations of German pancakes will call for 1 tbsp or more of sugar in the batter. I’ve found that syrup on top adds just enough sweetness. I’ve been making these for years. I have tweaked my recipe to make it as easy as possible. It requires only six ingredients total. Half of them are already in your kitchen stock. My family loves this kid-friendly, easy, and quick breakfast.
German pancakes can be described as sweet and savory dish with puffed, crispy edges and a soft, custard center. Because I don’t add any extra sugar to mine, they have a slight salty, buttery taste which balances the dish nicely.
Serving Quick and Kid-Friendly German Pancakes
Made with mostly eggs, you can feel a little better about feeding your family this “treat.” What is even better is that you can customize it for each family member with toppings such as powdered sugar, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and warm syrup. Create a fun German Pancake buffet and allow each person to top their pancake with the toppings they choose. How fun!

For sides, select some fruit that is in season. If berries are out of season and they cost too much, use frozen fruit and make a quick smoothie on the side. To add extra protein you can add some oven-baked bacon or skillet sausage. Personally, I love making bacon in the oven for this recipe. Everything is in the oven, so you don’t have to think about it once it’s in. Such an easy and quick breakfast for busy mornings! For a vegetarian side, Greek yogurt with some granola and honey is a great choice.

Saving Money with Quick and Kid-Friendly German Pancakes
German pancakes are a great choice for a low-cost breakfast. For my recipe, you only need 4 eggs and 1 cup of whole milk outside of kitchen stock ingredients. These ingredients normally cost less than $2.00 for 8 servings.
If you haven’t already, be sure to grab a copy of my kitchen stock list. All of my recipes on this blog are created with the kitchen stock in mind. This approach saves both time and money!

Making German Pancakes in Advance and Freezing.
Now, if you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know I am NOT a morning person. I struggle to put together a breakfast for hungry kids in the morning. It’s even harder when I haven’t had my coffee. But this recipe is so easy! I make it at least once a week.
Making Ahead While nothing beats eating German Pancakes fresh from the oven, you can make the dish ahead of time. Reheat the pancakes in the oven at 350°F for a few minutes until they are warm.
Storage German pancakes can be stored in an airtight container or Ziploc bag in the fridge for 2-3 days.
Freezing To freeze the pancakes, allow them first to cool completely. Once they are cooled, wrap each serving in plastic wrap and store in a freezer-safe bag. They will last in the freezer up to 3 months.
Thawing If frozen, place the pancakes in the fridge overnight. Then reheat them in the oven at 350°F on a baking sheet for 10-15 minutes.

Quick and Kid-Friendly German Pancakes
Equipment
- Medium Mixing Bowl
- Whisk
- 9"x13" Casserole Dish
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp Salted Butter
- 4 Eggs, Beaten
- 1 cup All Purpose Flour
- ½ tsp Sea Salt
- 1 cup Whole Milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Slice butter and place in the bottom of a 9×13" casserole dish.
- Place the casserole dish in the oven as it preheats.
- Beat eggs slightly in medium mixing bowl. Add flour, sea salt and whole milk. Mix until all lumps are gone, and you have a smooth batter.
- Once butter has melted entirely, remove casserole dish from oven.
- Pour batter over the butter. I like to pour the batter in a swirling motion so that the melted butter gets mixed in to the batter.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until edges are golden brown and batter is set.
- Serve immediately.
- Optional – Top with powdered sugar before serving.
